Pie – rois, p – roy, p-roys … how exactly does one say “Pyrois”? This is a question that we get a lot when talking to people asking about Pyrois Media, followed by how we came up with the name, so we thought we’d help out those who are curious.

First, to answer that popular question … you pronounce Pyrois “Pie–roy.”

If you’re not familiar with Greek mythology, Pyrois is one of the four mares who helped Helios (the God of the Sun) circle Earth every day. My goal when starting the company was to help equestrians all over the world (something Pyrois Media has accomplished in its first three years with clients in Australia, Europe, and the United States!) so something Helios-related seemed to fit exactly what the company goal was and still is today.

Sitting at a restaurant only a few feet from the Sydney Opera House in January of 2018, I was talking to friend about coming up with a name and my goals for the idea of a company I had in my head but wasn’t yet sure if I wanted to start. My initials “MBH” were thrown around as a potential name idea with my photography branded as “MBH Media.” But my goal for Pyrois Media started was to make it feel more like a family so I didn’t like the idea of naming it after myself. That’s where Helios and his mares came in.

While I didn’t want to go with Helios, there were four horses that we could run with (no pun intended.) When it was learned that Pyrois is called “the firey one,” it was jokingly said that her name fit my temperament, so the name stuck. Pyrois Media often teams up with Meagan Dean’s Red Mare Marketing on projects so it was also fitting that Pyrois is a chestnut mare (well – rumored to be made of fire but same coat color …)

There was a lot of Googling to make sure the pronunciation was something easy to say before I settled on the name … the only thing the discussion didn’t consider was that sneaky silent ‘S’ at the end.

You may be wondering why exactly I chose a Greek name for the company when there are legends from other countries I could have gone with. Greek mythology has always interested me and story of Helios’ journeys around the Earth fit in with my goals and travel schedule at the time so it all just clicked!

So there you have it, that’s the story of the pronunciation of Pyrois and how her name came to be chosen for a fledgling American company in the middle of downtown Sydney next to one of the most famous landmarks in the world!
